40 Days & 40 Nights

Forsyth, MO floodwaters

…on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.

If you live anywhere in the Midwest, specifically in Missouri or Arkansas, you’ve probably heard about the ridiculous amount of precipitation we’ve had lately. I’m not going to brand it as flooding of “epic proportions” but it’s definitely a historic set of events. While the sheer amount of water we’ve had is cause for amazement (and in some cases concern), the length of time during which we’ve been having these spring storms has been probably the most interesting. We’ve been at this over a month now.

A member of my extended family owns a cabin in Forsyth, MO, which is located on Lake Taneycomo (which is probably one of the most unimaginative names ever). My girlfriend and I recently took an afternoon trip down there to A) check on the pontoon boat we have moored there and B) get a first-hand look at all the water we Missouri folk have become so interested in. We also didn’t have anything better to do on a Sunday afternoon. The sight of the floodgates on the dam that connects Taneycomo and Bull Shoals being open to their widest point and the thousands upon thousands of gallons of water pouring through was a helluva thing. Almost poor memorable is the sight of those same thousands of gallons plummeting the short fall to the level of Bull Shoals below it…barely making a sound.

Hopefully the wetness and cold will be over before long and we can get on with the business of spring. I’m definitely in the mood for something other than cold rain.

And snow.
