I was reading a news article yesterday that referenced a specific internment camp in World War II, and that led me on a winding path through Wikipedia that eventually led to the Nazi ranks and their subsequent badges.

Even though I knew these badges were worn by murderers and represented a hierarchy formulated to perform evil, terrible acts, there was a little boy inside me who went, "Oh, shiny! I want some of those!" To make myself feel better, I then went to look at United States military badges. There's something about earning a rank, getting the badge on your shoulder or wherever they go, and/or just seeing those badges that is inspiring and exhilarating.

But I guess that was the idea, huh?
