Maiden Voyage

Nov. 7th, 2008

And so we set sail.

The dawning of a new age.  The first great step.  The beginning of a journey.  The thing that I’m going to do when I’m bored at work.

I’m blogging.  I mean it this time.  I’ve had a few false starts, separated by chunks of time where I’ve redesigned this site (I think it’s on version 12.0.9.236.4 RC1 Beta).  My obsessive/compulsive nature has gotten the better of me in the past…but no more!

In all seriousness…it is long past time for me to start making a contribution to this world in which I work and play: the community of the Internet.  If the Ritalin-juiced teenager down the street has a blog and produces weekly podcasts, then there’s no reason why I, a web designer, can’t start dribbling out some content of my own.

I look forward to this.  In the coming days, months, and years I hope to use this place as a tool for growth and as a retreat for expression.  My previous mistakes were in wanting to be a part of the web community and to be famous; I set out to join the ranks of Cameron Moll, Roger Johansson, Jason Santa Maria, Robert Nyman, and Happy Cog.  And then I realized something: these pillars of the web community didn’t get that way because they set out to do it.  They achieved their status through years of exploration, writing about what they were interested in, experimenting with the bleeding edge while being firmly grounded in the realities of this brave new world.  In my experience, setting out to be the best automatically deducts from your chances of getting there.

So, with that in mind…off we go.

Indeed indeed. There will always be a hundred improvements, and a thousand different things you want to do with your site and work, but everything must be completed one step at a time. There’s no real way around that, but once we recognize and accept it, we can finally unlock our knees and start walking.
